How was the Qur’an Revealed?
The Prophet Muhammad experienced various ways and conditions in terms of receiving revelations. The Qur’an was revealed to the prophet Muhammad through the intercession of the angel Gabriel for 22 years 2 months 22 days. In the process of revelation, there were several ways to convey the revelations brought by the angel Gabriel to the prophet Muhammad.
In Al-Qur’an al kariim wa tarjamatu ma’anihi ila al lughah al indunisiyah (1971), it is said that there were various ways and conditions of the Prophet Muhammad in receiving revelations, several ways and conditions are as follows;
First, angel Gabriel included revelations into the heart of the Prophet Muhammad. In this case, the Prophet did not see anything, only felt that the revelation was in his heart. Regarding this, the Prophet said: “The Holy Spirit was revealed to my heart.”
Second, angel revealed himself to the Prophet in the form of a man who spoke words to him so that the Prophet knew and could memorize the words correctly.
Third, revelation came to the Prophet like the clatter of a bell. This method was very hard to understand by the Prophet. Sometimes, prophet’s forehead splashed in sweat, even though the revelation happened in the winter falls. Sometimes the Prophet’s camel was forced to stop and sit because it felt very heavy when revelation came down as the prophet was riding a camel.
Narrated by Zaid bin Thabit: “I am the author of the revelations revealed to the Prophet. I saw the Messenger of Allah when the revelation fell, he seemed to be attacked by a hard fever and his sweat poured like a gem. Then after the revelation came down, then he returned as usual”.
Lastly, the angel appeared to the Prophet, not in the form of a man, but truly as the original. This is as contained in the Qur’an (53) An Najm verses 13 and 14.
وَلَقَدْ رَآهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَى (١٣) عِنْدَ سِدْرَةِ الْمُنْتَهَى ١٤)
Meaning: ” And he certainly saw him in another descent. At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary”
That was ways and conditions of the Prophet Muhammad in receiving the revelations of the Qur’an as explained in the Qur’an Al Kariim wa Tarjamatu ma’anihi ila al lughah al indunisiyah (1971).
Hope it can add insight and knowledge for us.
